** after living here more than three years i have proved incapable of learning any of the names of the streets in this town, except the one on which i live, which means all streets have to be identified by known landmarks: "the street with the music shop", "the street with the butcher shop" etc...

Love it. I describe landmarks in my hometown because I never learned the street names. I still use landmarks where we live now and we've been here 7 years. It's just easier (although Washington state was numbers and it helps to know 151st is closer to 164th than it is 128th).
In the area where I live, some streets have 3 different names, even if they're not very long... So, landmarks are compulsory! :)
heather & marta: good to see i'm not alone on this one!
I think you would like foursquare as an application as you can mark where you have been through gps tags. e.g.
http://foursquare.com/venue/1116067
So you can soon build up your own area based on how you visit it and check in each time you go there. It works on iPhone , Blackberry and most smartphones.
