the flysch...
the coastline between zumaia and deba is one of the most spectacular stretches in all the basque coast and home to the "flysch cliffs"... wikipedia explains the mechanics of a flysch better than i ever could, so i'll leave the technical stuff in their capable hands and simply present you with some photographic evidence of what happens when all those layers upon layers are pushed upwards to form cliffs and rock platforms...
it's like a map of what's happened on this planet in the last million years, all the geological and climatic changes laid out in neat orderly rows and slowly crumbling into the sea...

Most beautiful colors and landscapes. I'm adding this to my list of must sees.
Awesome landscapes and photos.
Heather: I'm ashamed to say that I've been living here 4 years now and this is the first time I've been to the flysch! New summer project: visit all the beaches of Euskadi instead of always going to the same one all the time!
PG: thanks! there's apparently a walk you can do between deba and zumaia, so that's and the to do list as well, so look out for more photos!
Nature is indeed a cruel mistress, but also devastatingly beautiful beneath some of its more stranger terrors.
Fantastic stuff: Thanks for posting these.
Muy bonito.
Jimmy Bastard: The devastating beauty of nature never ceases to amaze me. And it helps keep me sane...
Simon & Ellie: thanks!
Have you ever been to the Jurassic Coast in England? (Dorset, I think.) It's looks unbelievably beautiful as well.
p.s. my squiggly word is "conslamo." Isn't that Spanish for something like "door slamming in unison"?
hif: sorry for the late reply... my email has been so screwy lately, i'm still sorting out comments from weeks ago!! no i've never been to the jurassic coast in england but would love to go... and no, "conslamo" i don't think is spanish for anything "con" means "with" but slamo doesn't have anything to do with slamming a door (as far as i know)!
