es lo que hay...

the barman serves up two glasses of wine and the pintxos...

"es lo que hay", he says by way of an apology...

it's thursday evening pintxo-poteo, where you get a glass of crianza and a pintxo for one euro... just the kind of activity to attract a cheap lush like me...

we've apparently arrived late to this particular bar and all the special offer pintxos have run out... we're served up "gildas" instead...

friend and i gaze at the "inferior" offering thoughtfully... i take a picture, we're a little bit pissed...

i tell friend that the little pickled onion, gherkin, olive and pepper squewered on a toothpick, the secondary offering, is a metaphor for my life, it's not what I imagined it would be but you do what you can with what you've got...

friend snorts and says my life is more like a julia roberts movie... i'm not so sure, but i'm pretty bloody certain that julia roberts wouldn't end up living in mondragón...

i eat the metaphor, savoring the crunch of the gherkin and the sharp tang of the vinegar...

es lo que hay...

I love myself a little gherkin (but only if it comes with a glass of wine). xxx

I totally relate to this lovely post. "Es lo que hay" has almost become my mantra since I moved here.

I hate to quote IKEA, but i can't help liking their most recent advert - It's not the person who has most who is richest, but the person who desires least (crap tapa though :)).

Fun Fact: The name "gilda" was coined in a bar in San Sebastian because the shapely form of the pepper, olive and cocktail onion resembled the hourglass figure of Rita Hayworth in the film Gilda.

It's pretty much the best way to eat an anchovy.

Sometimes I feel like we don't get the right tapas and such because they think we are tourists since were are Americans, and they don't realize we live here and know that patatas bravas are just french fries with brava sauce...oh well...what are you gonna do? Just what you did...eat them anyway...hahaha

ellie: gherkins are great!!

pg: as a person who has a house almost completely furnished by ikea, i forgive you!! no, the tapa wasn't crap, occasionally I order and even pay for that little salty, sour goodness... I prefer them with an anchovy however!

erik: thanks for the fun fact... had no idea, but i'm sure several glasses of wine are required to believe an onion, pepper and olive skewered on a toothpick resembled Rita Hayworth! and yes, better with an anchovy!!

ashleigh... we all have that feeling! whenever we go to Zarautz, (a beachside town not far from here that attracts a lot of tourists) I always get habm to order the wine.. if i do it, they hear my accent, take one look at the blonde hair and fill up the glass with the most expensive wine on offer without asking (something they'd never do with a local) because they figure i'm a tourist and i won't notice the difference in price!
